High fuel prices -> more people will ride mass transit.
Then they raise the fare to recover higher fuel costs.
As fuel prices go down there will be less riders.
People have no jobs or less income.
And, they have to raise that fare again because of fewer riders...

Simple solution (as compared to other complicated/exhorbitantly expensive things being considered by our stupid politicians), just substantially lower transit fares to keep ahead of those for-too-long-cheaters of society (oil barons, Big 3 car makers and their blackmailer big unions).

Yeah can not very well use buses or train when you live out in the country but you can conserve your trips which I will keep on doing to save even more!

they should have increased transit when it was being used so heavily. i'm sure many people were disappointed in it after riding in cramped trains and buses.

If you are riding on good transit you are relaxed and not fighting the traffic. That will help keep riders in their seats. Also they will have seen the savings over not paying for driving their own cars, mileage is down, gas stays in the tank longer, and they are not as stressed.

In Boston, it's the MBTA (Mass Bay Transit Authority) which is unreliable and ineffectively run. Despite calling itself the "least expensive public transit system in the US", I either walk or drive and avoid taking the "T" whenever possible. Their recent price spikes did not result in better service.
